Morningstar Direct Advisory Suite is a connected set of research, planning and proposal tools for financial advisors, built on Morningstar's Direct Platform and launched in January 2025 as the successor to Advisor Workstation. It pairs Morningstar's independent investment data and ratings with planning and compliance-ready client reports. The suite serves financial advisors, RIAs and advisor enterprises. This review explains what the product does, the significant product-line changes buyers must weigh, and where it fits in a modern tech stack.

Understanding Morningstar's advisor lineup in 2026 requires context, because the company reshaped it fast. Advisor Workstation became Direct Advisory Suite. The Office platform for portfolio accounting is being retired. The Morningstar Wealth turnkey asset management business was sold to AssetMark in late 2024. Any honest review has to start there, because those moves change what you are actually buying.

What Direct Advisory Suite does

Direct Advisory Suite streamlines the research-to-proposal workflow. It is not a back office. Its strength is helping advisors research investments, build and analyze portfolios, and generate client-ready proposals, all layered on Morningstar's data.

  • Investment research: screen, chart and compare funds, ETFs, fixed income and structured products, backed by Morningstar ratings and private-market data
  • Investment planning: build plans aligned to client risk profiles using the Morningstar Portfolio Risk Score
  • Portfolio analytics: compare portfolios across risk, performance and exposure, with one-click optimization
  • Proposal generation: produce client-friendly, compliance-ready reports via the Scenario Builder tool
  • Enterprise Analytics: firmwide dashboards showing trends and business scope

The suite also markets an AI assistant named Mo, built on Morningstar research, to surface insights and generate client talking points. General availability of Mo inside the advisor workflow appears to be rolling out, so confirm its status in a demo rather than assuming full access.

Research and risk profiling

Research is Morningstar's historic strength, and it anchors the suite. Advisors get screening, charting and comparison tools sitting on top of Morningstar's database and independent ratings. Coverage spans traditional funds and ETFs through fixed income, structured products and private-market data.

The Portfolio Risk Score gives advisors a defensible way to profile client risk and align recommendations. For firms that build model portfolios, having Morningstar's research feeding those decisions is a recurring theme in client testimonials.

Proposals and compliance

Where research sets the foundation, proposal generation is where the suite earns its keep for you day to day. It offers more than 15 FINRA-reviewed reports, and compliance steps are woven into planning, proposal and reporting workflows. For advisors who must produce defensible, regulator-ready client documents, that built-in compliance posture saves meaningful time.

Who it fits, and the disruption to weigh

Direct Advisory Suite fits advisors who want Morningstar's research and planning tools at the center of their process, and who source portfolio accounting and reporting from another system. It is a research-and-proposal engine, not an all-in-one platform.

The product-line disruption is the headline risk for buyers, and it deserves plain language. Morningstar retired or exited multiple advisor tools in a short window. The Office platform, an all-in-one system for independent advisors and small RIAs, is being wound down, with more than 400 firms transitioning to SS&C Black Diamond as of August 2025. The Morningstar Wealth TAMP, roughly $12 billion in assets, moved to AssetMark. Trade press framed the Office shutdown as a cautionary tale about relying on a single vendor's roadmap.

Evaluating Morningstar for research and planning? That use case looks stable. If you were counting on Office for accounting and billing, plan your migration now.

That distinction, research-and-planning versus back-office, shapes both the fit and the integration strategy around the product.

Morningstar pricing

Pricing is not publicly disclosed. The Direct Advisory Suite page includes a pricing FAQ, yet exposes only "Talk to sales" and "Book a meeting" calls to action rather than a number. No public tiers are listed.

Third-party directories sometimes show ranges, but none are authoritative, so treat them as unverified. Separately, SS&C has published a Black Diamond migration offer for transitioning Office firms, including free historical data conversion and preferred alliance pricing locked for five years. That offer is SS&C's, not Morningstar's own advisor-suite pricing, and applies only to the migration path.

Integrations and ecosystem

The product page states the suite integrates with your tech stack but names no list. The one clearly documented partner is SS&C Black Diamond, which in February 2025 became the first wealth platform to integrate with Direct Advisory Suite. That alliance is strategically important: it pairs Morningstar's research, portfolio construction and analytics with Black Diamond's accounting, reporting, trading and compliance, effectively supplying the back office Morningstar no longer provides.

Morningstar Wealth model portfolios are also available on the AssetMark platform following the TAMP sale, and Morningstar has announced enterprise AI integrations with Microsoft, though buyers should confirm whether those apply to the advisor suite specifically.

Strengths and drawbacks

Morningstar's advisor offering is strong where the company has always been strong, and incomplete by design elsewhere.

The strengths are research depth, the Portfolio Risk Score, FINRA-reviewed proposals and built-in compliance, all from a trusted independent brand. For research and client-facing planning, few tools carry the same authority.

The drawbacks are structural. Direct Advisory Suite is not a full back office, so accounting, billing and trading must come from a partner. Pricing is opaque. And the recent exits from Office and the TAMP business create real switching costs and roadmap uncertainty for firms that relied on those products. No specific security certification appears on the advisor product page, so verify the security posture directly if that matters to your due diligence.

Verdict

Direct Advisory Suite earns a 7.9 out of 10 as a research, planning and proposal engine for advisors who value Morningstar's data and pair it with a separate back office. The research and compliance strengths are real and stable. The reservations are the product's deliberate scope limits and the roadmap disruption around Office and the TAMP sale. Confirm pricing in writing, verify which features are generally available, and plan any Office migration deliberately.
